Antique Victorian Large Oval Glass Hair and Lace Statement Mourning Locket Pendant

This beautiful and unique antique locket originates from the early Victorian era, circa 1850. It is oval in shape and very large in size, a statement piece. The frame is a gold tone metal/brass alloy and holds a panel of glass on each side.

Inside the locket a true story is told. On one side, we have artwork of arranged human hair, with gold wire detailing and tiny natural seed pearls. On the other side, we have a panel of lace. We can presume the lace was from an outfit of a loved one (perhaps even a wedding dress) and has been preserved alonside locks of their hair in a mark of celebration of the life. This mourning locket would have been made by a loved one to wear in memorial of the deceased. It sit upon, what we preusme, is the original length of black velvet ribbon. This ribbon can be tied around the neck to wear this exceptional piece of history.

The panels of glass can be removed by pushing through the frame, and you could indeed take the contents out if you so desired.

This locket is a stunning, simple and sleek large antique statement design - it won't go unnoticed when worn. This truly is a rare and unique antique find, and would grace any collection, a real object of curious for a collector.

SPECIFICS:
Metaterials. The frame of the locket is made of a gold tone brass alloy metal. The bail is made of a silver tone metal. The panels are glass.
Age: Circa 1850, Victorian era - possibly even earlier - Georgian era
Size: 5.7 cms tall (including the bail loops), 4.8 cms tall (excluding bail loops), 4.1 cms wide. 11 mms deep (extrernal depth).
Weight: 34.6 grams, heavy
Ribbon lenth: 20" inches long

In very good antique condition, with minimal surface wear and light tarnish, as to be expected from an old item. The glass has some minimal wear, some light scuffs and scratches to the surface in places - the glass is generally very good for it's age. This locket has been professionally cleaned and polished, it's ready to wear or to give as a gift. Please see the photos.

We offer in-house ring re-sizing. Please contact us if the ring you like is not in your size, we will advise on if it can be sized and will give you a no obligation quote. Some styles (such as full eternity bands) cannot be sized at all, and some rings may only be sized within reason. We are always happy to give honest advice and guidance.
