A beautiful antique Victorian locket pendant in solid 9ct yellow gold, decorated with fine hand engraved botanical detailing across both sides. One side features a flowing floral design with softly unfurling leaves and rounded petals, beautifully hand engraved in the romantic botanical style so often seen in late Victorian sentimental jewellery, reminiscent of wild roses. The reverse has an engraved oval cartouche framed by intricate pattern work, designed originally for a tiny engraved initial or monogram. The gold has developed the rich warm tone that antique yellow gold jewellery becomes known for over time, giving the piece a particularly soft and romantic feel. The locket still has it's original faceted bail loop, which is rare to find.

The engraving is wonderfully crisp and detailed, catching the light beautifully as the locket moves. Pieces like this were deeply personal objects during the Victorian era, often worn close to the heart containing tiny photographs, locks of hair, or keepsakes connected to loved ones. The oval shape and delicate scale make this an especially wearable antique piece, easy to layer with other chains or wear alone as a subtle everyday pendant.

There is a real gentleness to this locket that feels difficult to replicate in modern jewellery. A lovely original Victorian piece with beautiful craftsmanship, sentimental history, and the kind of quiet elegance that antique lockets are so loved for.

Inside the locket there is space to put photos inside, the original contents are still inside (two pieces of different coloured silk backing fabric), which you can leave or replace with your own photos. There is one original glass cover and another replacement perspex cover. The locket also has both original gold retainer frames inside, to secure photos down. Opens and closes securely from the right.

You may choose to purchase the pendant with or without a later added dainty 9ct yellow gold trace chain shown in the photos. It is marked 9ct gold on the clasp and measures 16" long. Please be aware that this chain is a yellow gold, it does not perfectly match the warmer antique gold of the pendant, but this isn't too noticeable when worn. This chain is not included in the listing price, but can be purchased for an additional £50 on request.

Unmarked, tested and verified as 9ct Back and Front. 9ct Gold Back and Front lockets were typical of gold lockets from this era. In the late Victorian and Edwardian period, lockets were manufactured with solid gold fronts and solid gold backs – to clarify, the metal at the front is a sheet of solid gold and the metal at the back is also a sheet of solid gold. Using this method allowed heavy engraving which would not be possible on rolled gold or gold plating. The sides, hinges and the loose frames inside are usually made of a sturdy base metal that has been gold plated. The reasoning behind such construction is that gold is a soft metal and lockets by default are opened and closed regularly. Using a sturdier metal than gold meant that they were less likely to buckle or break. These lockets are 90 - 95% solid gold and in the parts that are not they are gold plated and the plating is generally of such a good thickness that it still stands 100 years later.

In very good antique condition, with light age related surface wear, tiny dings (dents), and light scratches. With light tarnish inside, as to be expected from an old item. There is a tiny split to the reverse next to the blank panel (photographed), caused historically by the engraving being worked slightly too deeply into the gold by hand. It is very small and only noticeable on close inspection, but we always prefer to mention these details for accuracy. To us, it feels very much part of the handmade nature and age of the piece rather than something that detracts from its beauty, and it does not affect how the locket wears or functions. We have given this locket a sympathetic professional polish and clean, so it's ready to wear. Please see the photos.

RETURNS POLICY:

• We must be informed of the intent to return within 3 days of the item arriving, the item must be shipped back within 7 days of it arriving
• Returned items must be in original unaltered condition, must have all original packaging, and be sent back with full insurance. If returned with inadequate or missing packaging, additional charges will occur.
• Original shipping costs are non-refundable (postage costs will be deducted from the refund of any free delivery orders)
• For returns outside of the UK, a 10% restocking fee is charged.
