Antique Victorian 18ct Gold & Silver Rose Cut Diamond and Ruby Peace Dove Bird Pendant

An exquisite antique pendant. This stunning Victorian pendant has been crafted from sterling silver, a typical trait of jewellwey this age which was made before platinum and white gold were commercially available. This pendant likely started life as something else, perhaps a brooch, or part of a hair adornment - and at some point in time it has had an 18ct gold bail loop added to the back to made it this pendant is is now. The pendant is shaped like an elegant Dove of peace. This beautiful bird as excellent attention to detail, with raised spread wings, tiny beak and tiny talons.

The pendant is adorned with 54 pavé set glimmering natural rose cute diamonds, as well as one tiny pink ruby cabochon for the eye detail. These diamonds are of excellent quality, mainly white and very clear with no obvious distracting inclusions.

It's very hard to give an accurate carat weight for rose cut diamonds, but from the surface measurements alone, we can say that this pendant gives the appearance of approximately 1ct diamond carat weight.

A rose cut diamond is a type of antique diamond that’s famous for its domed top, which features several triangular facets arranged in a rose-like pattern. This is where the name of this cut comes from. Unlike modern diamond cuts, which feature a large pavilion (the pointed lower section that gives the diamond its depth) rose cut diamonds don’t feature any pavilion. As such, the lower half of a rose cut diamond is relatively flat, especially when compared to a brilliant cut diamond. Because of their flat shape, rose cut diamonds appear larger than other diamond cuts when viewed from above. It’s estimated that only one out of every 1,000 diamonds available today uses the rose cut, making this diamond shape exceptionally unique and uncommon.

The position of the bail loop is central and wide, and as such this pendant could be added to a black velvet choker necklace, or also worn on a simple gold chain.

Hallmarks: Unmarked. Tested and verified as solid sterling silver with an affixed solid 18ct gold bail loop. The back side of the silver has a gold vermeil which has worn in places.
Age: Circa 1890, late Victorian era / early Edwardian era.
Weight: 4.3 grams

In very good antique condition. All diamonds are there, none are missing. With minor light surface wear and tarnish, as to be expected from any antique item. This pendant has been professionally cleaned and polished, it's ready to wear or to give as a gift. Please see the photos.
