A rare and deeply evocative Victorian mourning ring, crafted in 15ct yellow gold and dating to circa 1850. This beautifully preserved piece is rich with period antique detail, combining black enamel, seed pearls, and finely woven human hair set into the band. This hair is visible through decorative open windows along the band. At the centre sits a subtle cross motif, flanked by two ivy leaves, all delicately worked and framed by careful engraving along the shoulders and shank. Clear Victorian hallmarks remain present, firmly placing the ring within its historical context. The design comes together perfectly, clearly there has been a lot of love and thought gone into the making of this piece.

Hair memorial jewellery held profound meaning in the 19th century. Human hair was treasured as a lasting, tangible connection to a loved one, believed to hold something of the individual’s essence. Woven into jewellery, it symbolised remembrance, eternal bonds, and love that endured beyond loss. Black enamel was traditionally associated with mourning and solemn reflection, while seed pearls often represented tears, purity, and devotion, making their combination especially poignant to contemporary wearers. The ivy leaves within the design, signify everlasting love according to the Victorian language of flowers.

This ring is a remarkable survivor of its time, offering collectors a genuine example of Victorian sentimentality and craftsmanship. SPECIFICS:
Ring Size: UK P / US 8 (a medium finger size). Band rings tend to fit quite snugly, so this ring may be better suited to a marginally smaller size than it measures (O - O 1/2, 7.5 - 7.75). This ring cannot be resized.
Hallmarks: Hallmarked as 15ct Gold, Chester, the date letter has faded with age, but looks to me from the outline, like it could correspond to the year 1852 - which is solid appropriate circa age given the design of the ring. Makers mark is hard to decipher also.
Age: Circa 1850, mid Victorian era
Weight: 2.3 grams
Ring Face: 14 x 7.5 grams. The band width is 4.5 mms

In good antique condition with minimal signs of wear. There is slight enamel loss in places. There is some light surface wear and tarnish to the gold. The pearls have natural colour variance. This ring has been professionally cleaned and polished, it's ready to wear or to give as a gift. Please see the photos.

We offer in-house ring re-sizing. Please contact us if the ring you like is not in your size, we will advise on if it can be sized and will give you a no obligation quote. Some styles (such as full eternity bands) cannot be sized at all, and some rings may only be sized within reason. We are always happy to give honest advice and guidance.

Items over £200 are posted via Royal Mail Special Delivery

International orders:
Items under £200 are shipped via Royal Mail International Standard (no tracking, but tracking can be added for a £5 upgrade at checkout if needed)

RETURNS POLICY:

• We must be informed of the intent to return within 3 days of the item arriving, the item must be shipped back within 7 days of it arriving
• Returned items must be in original unaltered condition, must have all original packaging, and be sent back with full insurance. If returned with inadequate or missing packaging, additional charges will occur.
• Original shipping costs are non-refundable (postage costs will be deducted from the refund of any free delivery orders)
• For returns outside of the UK, a 10% restocking fee is charged.
• In instances where a client declines to pay an import charge, the restocking fee is 20%

NON-RETURNABLE ITEMS:
Pierced earrings cannot be returned under UK hygeine legislation.
