A beautiful antique love heart-shaped locket from the Art Nouveau era, circa 1900, crafted in warm yellow gold. The front of the locket features a delicate raised portrait of a woman in profile, her softly styled hair adorned with a floral garland headband. The flowing lines and naturalistic design are wonderfully characteristic of Art Nouveau jewellery, celebrating beauty, nature and femininity. The reverse of the locket features a beautifully textured finish, with a softly hammered, honeycomb-like pattern that catches the light in a warm, subtle way. This simple decorative treatment gives the piece a lovely tactile quality and contrasts nicely with the detailed interior and romantic imagery on the front.

The locket opens to reveal preserved dried flowers, believed to be heather, carefully arranged against a soft blue background. Lockets containing flowers were popular during the Victorian and early 20th century periods, often worn as sentimental keepsakes to preserve meaningful moments, places, or memories. Heather holds strong associations in Scottish culture and is traditionally linked with protection and good fortune - particularly “lucky white heather,” which has long been given as a token of love and blessing. However, these dried flowers are easily removed if you would prefer to add your own photos. The locket opens and closes securely from the right, and closes with a secure click. Both original frames are inside the locket, there is perspex on one side (holding in the dried flowers) and missing on the other, but a photo could still be secured with the frame.

The heart shape, combined with the portrait and preserved flowers, gives this piece a deeply romantic and personal feeling. It is a lovely example of antique sentimental jewellery, designed to be worn close to the heart and treasured over time. This charming and unusual antique locket has beautiful symbolism and history - perfect for collectors of Art Nouveau jewellery, antique lockets, or meaningful vintage keepsakes.

The locket can be purchased alone, or with the 16" 9ct yellow gold modern trace chain pictured. This chain stamped 9ct gold. It's a lightweight, fine, modern chain and is a slightly different tone of gold from the locket itself, as it is modern it does not have the same rosy glow as antique gold, but this isn't too noticeable when worn. This chain is not included in the listing cost, but can be purchased for an additional £50 on request.

Unmarked, tested and verified as 9ct Back and Front. 9ct Gold Back and Front lockets were typical of gold lockets from this era. In the late Victorian and Edwardian period, lockets were manufactured with solid gold fronts and solid gold backs – to clarify, the metal at the front is a sheet of solid gold and the metal at the back is also a sheet of solid gold. Using this method allowed heavy engraving which would not be possible on rolled gold or gold plating. The sides, hinges and the loose frames inside are usually made of a sturdy base metal that has been gold plated. The reasoning behind such construction is that gold is a soft metal and lockets by default are opened and closed regularly. Using a sturdier metal than gold meant that they were less likely to buckle or break. These lockets are 90 – 95% solid gold and in the parts that are not they are gold plated and the plating is generally of such a good thickness that it still stands 100 years later.

In very good antique condition, with light age related surface wear and light scratches. With light tarnish inside, as to be expected from an old item. We have given this locket a sympathetic professional polish and clean, so it's ready to wear. Please see the photos.

We offer in-house ring re-sizing. Please contact us if the ring you like is not in your size, we will advise on if it can be sized and will give you a no obligation quote. Some styles (such as full eternity bands) cannot be sized at all, and some rings may only be sized within reason. We are always happy to give honest advice and guidance.

RETURNS POLICY:

• We must be informed of the intent to return within 3 days of the item arriving, the item must be shipped back within 7 days of it arriving
• Returned items must be in original unaltered condition, must have all original packaging, and be sent back with full insurance. If returned with inadequate or missing packaging, additional charges will occur.
• Original shipping costs are non-refundable (postage costs will be deducted from the refund of any free delivery orders)
• For returns outside of the UK, a 10% restocking fee is charged.
• In instances where a client declines to pay an import charge, the restocking fee is 20%
