Antique 1824 Georgian 15ct Gold Garnet and Rock Crystal Memorial Locket Pendant

A beautiful antique pendant, a late Georgian era piece engraved for the year 1824. This amazing old locket is just divine, it is set with 13 red flat cut garnets, all of which are held within low crimped claw collet settings. these garnets are presumably of almadine variety, due to their pink undertones, and are set in true Georgian style - wtih losed backs and foil. The centerpiece of the pendant is an opening rock crystal locket (rock crystal was often used to form a locket. Anything placed inside the locket, like a tiny flower, is magnified). This Georgian locket comprises two slightly domed rock crystal cabochons placed flat sides together, set within a garnet set gold frame. A tiny hinge is located the back, this is fully functioning and opens from the bottom.

Inside the locket currently, we see some woven hair art - blonde to the front and brown to the back - what an intricate skill to wind hair in such a fine way. Presumably this hair is a lock from someones dearest mother, whom the whole pendant is dedicated to. Inscribed on the back we can read ''To the memory of my Mother JH, December 4th 1824". What a fascinating piece of wearable history.

Georgain pieces such as this, in such wonderful condition, have become exceedingly hard to find over recent years. This rare and original pendant would truly grace any fine collection, and is almost certain to gorw in value over the years it's owned.

SPECIFICS:
Hallmarks: None - tested as verified as 14ct gold throughout (14ct gold was not typically found in pieces of this age, 15ct was used - our gold tester only looks for 14ct as it's the modern equilivant, but it's safe to assume this piece is 15ct due to it's age)
Gemstones: 12x (5mm) red flat cut garnets, 1x (6mm) flat cut red garnet in the bail.
Pendant Size: 4.2 cms tall, 2.9 cms wide.
Locket Size (Rock Crystal part): 16.5 x 12.5 mm's
Weight: 7.4 grams

The pendant is very good antique condition, with some light tarnish and age related wear as to be expected from any antique item. It has been professionally, sympathetically, cleaned and polished. The bail loop has a small solder join above the garnet, perhaps an old repair from some point in time. The rock crystal has minimal surface wear. Please see the photos.

We offer in-house ring re-sizing. Please contact us if the ring you like is not in your size, we will advise on if it can be sized and will give you a no obligation quote. Some styles (such as full eternity bands) cannot be sized at all, and some rings may only be sized within reason. We are always happy to give honest advice and guidance.
